Face of the fictional character Candide

Candide is Voltaire's most famous work. It's a hilarious and biting satire of the various follies of humankind, and has remained relevant and entertaining for centuries. The titular character, Candide, is often labeled a simpleton, but whether he actually is is up for debate.

Throughout the course of the novel, Candide goes through more trials and tribulations than most people could ever imagine. He witnesses war, death, torture, betrayal, famine, and more. And yet, despite all of this, he remains optimistic. Following the teachings of his tutor Pangloss, Candide believes that "All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds."

So, is Candide intelligent?
